A NIGHT WITH OUR STARS

A Night With Our Stars 2021

Picture
Our 18th ANWOS was held on Friday 12 March 2021 at the Bendat Centre in Dodd St, Wembley and tickets sold out within a week of the event. Guests were welcomed by WA Branch President and MC Jan Nicholls.

Fremantle Press once again were our sponsors and they were represented on the night by Cate Sutherland and Chloe Walton. Eight out of the 20 presenters on the program were published by Fremantle Press. Westbooks were the official book supplier, as they have been since the start and offered a generous discount on pre-orders.

Of the 20 presenters originally invited two had to withdraw for health reasons – Shirley Marr and Tracey Gibbs. Shirley was represented by Katy Jiang who illustrated their book Little Jiang. Sharon Giltrow stepped in at short notice to replace Tracey Gibbs. Raewyn Caisley was a last-minute withdrawal as she and her family were required to take a COVID test and remain in isolation.

Guests enjoyed a glass of wine and platters from Butterfly catering which were beautifully presented as always, with the food varied, tasty and plentiful.

A bundle of books donated by Hachette was awarded to Jenni Woodroffe, the first person to book (other than a committee member). Four raffle prizes of bags of books from various donors were given to delighted winners and the successful bidder in the silent auction of an original signed sketch donated by Karen Blair was Justine Power from the ACT Branch.

Feedback from presenters and guests was overwhelmingly positive and we are already planning for the next one. Save the date in your diaries – Friday 18 March 2022 and make a note to book early!

It was a truly magical occasion and the joy, fun and sheer pleasure of being there was palpable.  It must have been very difficult to choose the presenters and it was a good mix of brand new presenters, emerging creators and established creators. The list of WA  book titles, creators and publishers was an excellent way of honouring the personal and diverse links with so many in the children's lit world. Thank you for the enthusiastic support and teamwork to ensure the show goes ahead.

I can't tell you what this year's ANWOS meant to me as an emerging writer. I have been attending these events for many years, never thinking for a moment that I would be involved in any other way than as part of an admiring audience. I was so very nervous, but everybody was so professional, they knew exactly what to say and do to make a newbie comfortable. Looking out at a large audience for the first time, I saw only smiles and understanding. I was so happy to be included with these stellar speakers and creatives. Thank you all for a beautiful memory.

I have attended quite a few ANWOS’s over the years as a school library officer, but to be one of the Stars this year was incredible. My very first book was released during the height of the first COVID lockdown in April last year (meaning no fanfare or meeting people face to face!), so to be able to have a chance to talk about it and sign books at ANWOS meant so much! I am so grateful to Jan and the rest of the CBCA WA Branch; thank you for making me a Star and making me feel so special.

I received such a warm welcome at my first ANWOS despite the beautifully caped Jan being a little terrifying with a skill saw (a kill saw?). I loved hearing about all the new books and Cristy kicked off the night with so much energy! Thanks to organisers and volunteers, and everyone who stopped by the signing tables for a chat.

It was my first time at ANWOS and I can’t speak more highly of what an enjoyable, valuable night it was. I got to pitch myself and my book in such a welcoming environment. I had so many people saying, “I didn’t even know about your book!” Yet my books sold out at the event! Thank you to the CBCA WA for helping to get me and my book out there!
                                                                                                                                   - Rebecca Higgie

A huge THANK YOOOOOU to the entire CBCA WA team, and especially to Jan, who is always magnificent as MC and Queen Wrangler of Writers and Illustrators. It was a terrific night! So glorious to all be together, celebrating creativity and children's literacy and being part of the CBCA tribe.
